and can't wait for spring.

Comments: Hello to the group!

My name is Doug Finnie. I am a 52 year old rider who has
been involved with motorcycles for the last 35 years. I
have gone thru a bunch of bikes both street and dirt, but t
e only one remaining is a modified 1991 XR 250. We (myself,
son and stepson) do most of our riding in the Rocky
mountains northwest of Calgary, Alberta. WE live in
Cochrane, which is 15 miles west of Calgary.

The XR was bought as a basket case from a young fellow who
had someone build a high performance for him. He installed
it himself, but did not bother to check the jetting before
taking it for a long hard ride. The end result was a blown
engine. I rebuilt it and now have about $1800 cdn into it.

I would like to hear more about modifications to both the
older XR's and the 96 and newer, as I really enjoy XR's and
am looking to purchase a 96-01 250

Thanks
Doug

Comments: Let's see more about the the "Little Guy," the XR250R! I
have a 2001 XR250 and it is a great bike for a beginner
like myself. Plenty of power, great handling and not too
much bike to get yourself into trouble. Looking for a bike
that will let you learn how to ride and not be quickly
outgrown, check out the XR250R!

Comments: Who said Kiwi's can't fly! As an adventurous XR650L owner I
can be found blasting along the back roads of this great
country, and thus have found it necessary to make a few
changes to the bike. I have added a 23 litre Acerbis tank,
alloy bars & handguards, removed the smog gear, re-jetted
to 167 main, 55 pilot with a UNI filter and the top off the
air box. I have also replaced the tail-light with a smaller
one and the rear indicators with rubber mounted round ones.
I have spent hours trying to get the forks as plush as
possible by adjustment and oil weights, air pressure etc.
Remarkably I have ended up with 2.5 oz oil-145mm from top
(springs out), compression 2 clicks back from full hard,
with 3lbs air preload. I will probably try raising the oil
level to 120mm next. The reason for the light oil is that I
found the very fast impacts I encounter at 80-100kph where
very harsh, the light oil seemed to allow the oil to flow
properly during very quick compression. Also I found at low
speed int tighter bush trails the lighter oil allowed the
forks to absorb small ledges and tree roots better,
reducing deflection which is a real bonus with such a heavy
bike.
Lastly I have a small homemade screen mounted and disk and
fork protectors from acerbis. My next project is a carrier
and sump guard, and ultimately I will probably replace the
muffler.

Keep riding!!!!

DWS.

Comments: I bought an XR 250 because of the HondaXR.com web site . I
was so disappointed when it was discontinued. I am glad to
find you guys.
I could use some guidance. The bike I bought runs great
but is smoking . I would love to have the engine top end
rebuilt but I can't find anyone to do this job and I know
that the Honda shop would cost a fortune and take forever.
I would be willing to take the engine down if i could find
someone to do the head and cylinder. Ant advice would be
appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

there's no problem with the CDI units. Do the XR's have
problems with their CDI units? I'd be interested in getting
any information about such problems. I'm in a Honda V-twin
e-group, and apparently one of the members can rectify the
problem. New CDI units are $200 .

Comments: Love the XR ONLY pages here, really interested in other
riders here in the New England area, as I am stationed at
the Naval Submarine Base in Groton,Ct. I joined the NETRA
and they have gained recognition with sanctioned races and
all, but... seems like the XR has been lost somewhere, well
at least the 350R. I am the second owner of me 350R and I
love her, seems people underestimate her til she gets by
them.
Really hard to get parts for her too, I'm trying to get a
front rim from somewhere on OK and they sent me the wrong
rim, here we go again... hopefully they'll get it right
this time. ANYONE handy or know of anyone who can
straighten the rim for under a kings ransom????
I'll keep checking back and please feel free to e-mail me
with XR350R stuff.

be a fat heavy beast but it's fun to ride. I have modified
my bike some. Took off the awful smog junk. Rejetted the
carb. Changed the air filter to a K&N one. Put a XR's
Only skid plate on it. And have an oil temp gauge for it
too. I am wondering about the low-link to lower the seat
height a bit. I can barely hit my toes with it in stock
form. If any of you have lowered yours please tell me how
you did it and the result. I would appreciate it a bunch.

Thanks and keep the throttle pegged,

I got it! The new XP650R is mine. I drive this model since
2 weeks here in Germany and fun was never more than yet. My
old XR600R was also very well (and fast enough for most
KTMs, CRs, GasGas, Huskys & Co.) but the new one is a new
one and that's the difference. It got more power and a
better suspension. That's all I want to say. No time to
loose, because I have to drive. Nice Website and go on with
it, it's my favorite XR site on the net! A XR-fan from

I'm thinking about putting my 600 engine into a CR 500 frame. I want to keep the 4 stroke dependability with the 2 stroke performance package. The 650R is still too bulky and heavy for the woods riding here in Alaska. What do you think? Any suggestions would be helpful.
