Comments:Great site, glad to see it's still active. Recently back into dirt after 20 year layoff (kids, job, and a lot of other bs excusses... was a D37 desert racer in the '70s. I now own my buddies tricked out '97 XR400 and love it. Have been doing some trail riding and dualsporting around Southern California and even bought the wife a new CRF230 for her to put around on. Enjoy reading everyones comments and will visit here often.

Comments:love this site i'm currently working on a 1985 xr600rf the bike has been in my family (extnded family) since 1987 when i picked it up from a friend for my brother in law who could'nt afford it at the time... at that time i had a yz490.Anyway, after a few years of riding together my wife had unfortunetly past away leaving me with my son and daughter needless to say the riding stopped the yz was sold and i had more responsibilities than you could shake a stick at.well it's been 5 yrs now and recently my brother in law and myself accompanied my younger brother to his second ccs event where we saw 5 motards goin at it wfo my nipples were hard as rocks!!! my brother knowing, that this is what i used to live for and could'nt help to notice the drewl and also knowing i could'nt afford a new bike turned to me with a huge smile and said bro take the xr and do something big with it. ya know the old say'in what goes around comes around or even better.. give, and you shall recieve. believe it!!!!the xr transformation so far: it's been stripped completely, frame and engine bead blasted. frame repainted stock orange.all plastics have been sanded back to show room cond using 220,320,400,600,1000,1500,and then polished with a hard rag & many hours of rubbing. i polished the swing arm triple clamp and forks, answer pro tapers cr hi, little head work, little bottom end, couple tweaks on suspesion still working on what to do for wheels and tires can't afford exel or akront maybe relace an old xr 17" rear to my stock front hub and run the fatest tires possible so after all... i guess what i wanted to say is do good to others!! because somewhere sometime someone will do good to you! may your front tires allways point upwardly and effortlessly!! amen... greg brown daddyo2721@netscape.net

Comments:What's up with no xr650l's. Here in Colorado they are the perfect bike for boulder bashing to old mine sites and ghost towns. Mine is a 2000. I've added an 4 gallon Ims tank , a Ims smog block off kit, an arcebis molsoft tailight, renthal bars, and a supertrapp Isd2 race series pipe. 1997 tank graphics and arcebis front fork and disc guards round out the beast. I added more aggresive rubber and changed the front sprocket to a 12 tooth. It also makes a great commuter to my job downtown or to the light rail station. Any takers for the ride down into Georgetown on the trail the forest service told me was unpassable. The trick is I'm able to ride the beast back to Denver on interstate 70.

Comments:Great site. I own a xr400 and have done a few mods to greatly improve both performance and reliablity. The choke butterfly has been replaced after it failed thankfully whilst trying to start and the offending piece closed the plug gap. Secondly 2nd gear died before doing and further damage to the gearbox. A mod really worth looking at is to press the auto decomp off the cam and press on a spacer in its place. Starting is dramatically easier and eliminates the decomp cutting in at low revs and stalling. We ride around the Yackandandah area in north east Victoria.

Comments:As a ongoing quest to always improve myself as a rider I was reading the "Twenty Years of Tips and Tricks" and came across the tip about welding a washer to the kickstand. Be it that that is a good solution to your bike not sinking into the mud, it sounds like an ugly looking solution. I use a somewhat comical but more attractive looking solution to the anoying problem of your bike tipping into the soft ground. You can find small toddler shoes at any retail store for a very small price. I found if you poke a small hole in the back of the shoe and zip tie it to the bottem of the stand and tie the laces tight too it will never fall off. I have great success with this and I hope you will too.

Comments:Great site keep it up.For those who want a better front suspension try a set of 89/90 cr500 forks. These are cartrigde style 45mm ,bigger than the xr models with a direct fitup.I put them on my 90 xr600 as well as adding a 92 rear for the disk brake 1000$US for both.Get the complete front and rear assy. The brake master cylinder needs a fabricated mount however this was easily done , any good shop can do it if your unable. At 6'2 265 these forks treat me right in desert sand as well as tight trails ,plus have more tunable options over the xr.Any quetions feel free to mail, ill send pics.

Comments:I stayed from 96 till 2000 in south africa and baught a xr500r 82mod which was repaird by nerds(they put two different crankcase`s together) and it took some time to fix everything. As the yaers went by I build a jig to put the cam in a rollerbearing and a needle race and enjoyed riding there and in namibia as well. Got to know those bikes quite well and had to find out which bike dealers are trustworthy and which are gangsters. After almost 2 years I dug it out on my holiday in south africa and it started even with 2 year old petrol. It payed out to crank the piston to TDC and pour oil in the spark plug hole. I am now back in germany and look forward to my next holiday down there and go to rallies and meet my friends again.

I have recently swapped riding two strokes for riding four strokes, the xr I own is much better than riding a two stroke. It is fun plus without the downtime of top end rebuilds allthe time. While the two strokes are fighting for traction the xr has long but hooked up,and blasting me down the fire trails at an awesome pace.

Comments:The Haggard’s cycle story:
Well,

As a result of me buying a new Honda CBR600 F4i in June, my mother in law gave my 13-year-old son a 27-year-old Honda Trail 90. He got it running and very soon was pushing it past its practical limits. I was convinced that this would result in certain destruction of the bike as well as putting him at risk. So... we wound up buying him a new a new 02 XR100 for his 14th birthday on Sept. 11th... So as he started to progress with his new XR, i was left limping around after him on the 27-year old Trail 90. He would graciously allow me time on his XR while he rode the T90. I quickly knew that I was going to buy one soon. But what should I buy? I thought of an XR200, it would be good enough to chase around with Quentin and it would certainly be a huge improvement over the T90 but I was having a terrible time making up my mind. I was leaning towards an XR250, but one of my employees who has ridden most of his life convinced me that I had to get at least an XR400. He claimed that I would rapidly want more power if I got the lesser bike. So I follow his good advice, and that's what I bought. It was intimidating at first, largely because both feet didn't reach the ground at the same time, but the power was welcome and the size of the bike seem to shrink every minute I was on the bike. Well now that my son and were riding as much as my body would take, that left my wife Diane and our 9 year old daughter Rachel on the T90. I knew that wasn't go to last to long and shortly they had a both had appropriate XRs. Diane a 200 and Rachel a 70.

So, at the beginning of the summer we had zero motorcycles, we now have five! We have the Honda CBR600 F4I, and the family of XRs, the 400, 200, 100 and the 70. We are having the times of our lives…

Re Just XRs. Thank you very much for compiling and maintaining this site. It is a great source of information especially for those of us who a relatively new to the scene.

Comments:well! here's a quite good page! I'm also a passionate
enduro big four stroke XR600r rider. I love hard climbing,
despite the weight of my "babe". I just think that, since
XRs are XC/Enduro bikes you sould include something about
your aussie riders like J. Hendricks, The allmighty Shane
Watts or the inoxidable Stefan Merriman, did they had an XR
experience ?. well! greetings here from Portugal and...
keep riding!
